Hazel Park High to add security at basketball games

Hazel Park High School is adding security and beefing up rules for fan etiquette as a result of fights that erupted last week at the boys’ basketball game against North Farmington.

The fights broke out after a student, who was eventually identified and disciplined, threw a bottle onto the court from the stands at Thursday’s game, stopping the clock with just over a minute left to play. Chaos ensued, with fans spilling onto the court.

The game was unruly even before the bottle throwing incident, as athletic director Dr. David Muylaert was thrown out of the game after a scuffle with a referee, and a referee chest bumped a scorekeeper during the game.

Principal Matt Dailey said Hazel Park Police auxiliary units will be on hand at athletic events scheduled for this week.

He said the district also put additional rules in place as discipline and fan etiquette.

“We came out with a spectator and student code of conduct … on what we expect of their behavior at these events, what our disciplinary process will look like with that,” Dailey said.

This week, the boys’ basketball team plays at Auburn Hills Avondale on Tuesday; the junior varsity and varsity girls’ basketball teams are home Thursday versus Berkley and on Friday the boys’ junior varsity and varsity basketball teams are home against Troy High School.

Hazel Park High School announcer replaced after basketball brawl

The announcer for Hazel Park High School is out of a job after an investigation into fights that broke out during a boys basketball game last week against North Farmington.

A basketball on a court floor.

A basketball on a court floor.

Superintendent Dr. Amy Kruppe confirmed Wednesday morning that the announcer has been replaced because of inappropriate comments made during the game, resulting in the school’s athletic director, David Muylaert, being kicked out in the third quarter, a fan throwing a bottle onto the court and an official being accosted by the announcer.

“What I can say is that in our investigation that the announcer’s comments were towards Hazel Park and not sportsmanlike,’’ said Kruppe. “The announcer should be neutral, and our announcer won’t be announcing for us.’’

5 finalists announced for 2017 Michigan Miss Basketball

Kruppe said a video of the game was shown at Monday’s school board meeting.

“There were not any student fights,’’ said Kruppe. “It was also reported our basketball coach touched an official. He did not.”

A student spotted throwing a bottle onto the floor turned herself in the next day and was disciplined, Kruppe said. The bottle-throwing incident resulted in the game being halted with 1:15 left to play. The incident was reported to the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA).

“One of our students threw a bottle and that student has been disciplined,’’ said Kruppe. “That was inappropriate. Our AD made a comment to the referee, which was inappropriate. There were three adults that made some decisions that they all, in retrospect, wish they did not. The MHSAA has to make a decision what to do with the official.’’

An MHSAA report by the referees who worked the game was obtained by the Free Press. North Farmington Coach Todd Negoshian and Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Coach Todd Covert, who was in attendance scouting, also confirmed that multiple inflammatory remarks were made by the announcer towards the referees.

The MHSAA said it was still reviewing the information and no decision had been made about any possible disciplinary action.

According to the report:

  • The game announcer seemed “out of sorts” while announcing the game’s starting lineups.
  • The announcer told fans: “We need help to control this situation. We need help from the fans. It’s 8 on 5.” Eight on five suggest Hazel Park was not just playing against the North Farmington players, but playing against the referees as well.
  • One official said he had to go over to the announcer and tell him to not talk on the microphone when North Farmington players had the ball ready to shoot free throws.
  • When a recent transfer player checked into the game for North Farmington, the announced said, “Straight from Atlanta, Georgia, checking in.”
  • Negoshian also heard him say “Welcome to North Farmington refereeing.’’

After a Hazel Park assistant coach was assessed a technical foul, the report said the Hazel Park announcer made comments with no other intent other than to incite a hostile environment for the officials and the North Farmington players and coaches.

The referee stopped the game and went over to Muylaert and asked him to tell the announcer that he could no longer call the game.

Muylaert proceeded to walk onto the floor, berate the referee and criticized the job one of the refs was doing. That’s when Muylaert was ejected from the gym.

Recruiting mailbag: Will Brian Bowen pick MSU? Can U-M still get Bamba?

Brian Bowen of Saginaw Arthur Hill

Brian Bowen of Saginaw Arthur Hill

Sean Merriman is a recruiting aficionado who used to work for rivals.com and the Big Ten Network and now is with Intersport. Look for his mailbag every other week (with some live chats sprinkled in, too). If you have a recruiting question for Sean, e-mail him at merriman.sean@gmail.com or tweet him @merrimantweets

Is Michigan basically out of the running for five-star basketball prospect Mo Bamba? — Alex

I won’t say they are out of the running, but I do think it’s fair to say Michigan is a distant third behind Kentucky and Duke. Kentucky has been my pick all along, though Bamba is expected to visit Duke at the end of the month. That visit potentially could sway his decision. Either way, while it would make a giant splash if Michigan could  land the 6-11 Bamba, this one of going to come down to Duke and Kentucky.

Is MSU using the Dakich thing to distract from issues there now? — Tony

No. When a Hall of Fame coach begins a press conference by calling out an ESPN personality for insulting his school and their education system, that is news. I thought fellow Freep writer Chris Solari did an outstanding job of covering the Dakich saga. I also think he’s done an outstanding job with covering the ongoing investigation into the alleged sexual assault involving Michigan State football players, which I believe is what you’re referring to in your question. It’s very challenging to cover a topic like that when you have limited information and limited resources at your disposal. In no way, shape or form was the Dakich news a cover to distract from current issues going on at MSU.

Where do you think five-star basketball prospect Brian Bowen goes? — AJ

This is one of the strangest recruitments I have covered in recent memory, AJ. Early in the process, I felt MSU was the clear leader for Bowen and everyone else was far behind. Then Arizona emerged as the leader, while Creighton and MSU seemed to be trailing. Following Bowen’s visit to East Lansing, everything I heard was positive and it felt like MSU was right back in contention Then, this week, rumors begin to surface that Creighton had taken the lead. You know what that tells me? No one truly knows where Bowen will end up, except Bowen. He is expected to announce his decision within the next two weeks. I believe MSU has as good a chance at landing him right now as anyone. One thing is for sure: His announcement is going to make one school very happy.

If Arizona and Creighton are rumored to be favorites for Brian Bowen, why does MSU still lead the 247Sports crystal ball then? — Kaiser

Ah yes, the infamous crystal ball. Here’s a little inside secret about the crystal ball that may burst your bubble: It’s not always right. When looking at the crystal ball, the key is to focus on the most recent predictions and which way those predictions are trending. There are predictions in Bowen’s crystal ball that go as far back as 2013. If you look at the most recent crystal ball predictions for Bowen, there are two for Arizona in 2017, and two for Michigan State.

Who will be Michigan’s starting quarterback in 2017? — Bleu

Wilton Speight. I actually thought Speight was better than expected this past season. People tend to forget that he led Michigan to a 9-0 record before getting hurt at Iowa. Also, keep in mind the Wolverines are replacing eight starters on offense. Having a quarterback with experience in a young offense is vital to Michigan’s success in 2017.

No regrets for ex-Michigan star, Hall of Fame finalist Chris Webber

NEW ORLEANS – Chris Webber hopes to add another chapter to his memorable, yet sometimes troubled, basketball career.

The former high school standout at Birmingham Detroit Country Day, who achieved college stardom at Michigan and played 15 NBA seasons, was named a finalist Saturday for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

“It was an honor to hear my name,” said Webber, who attended the ceremony at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans. “There’s no guarantee that you’ll make it in from this point, but sitting here right now, I’m just really thankful.”

Former NBA point guard and current Pistons assistant coach Tim Hardaway, former Michigan star Rudy Tomjanovich (Hamtramck) and former NBA scoring champion Tracy McGrady, played one season with the Pistons, were among the other finalists.

The 2017 class will be announced April 3 in Phoenix before the NCAA men’s basketball national championship game.

Webber, part of the Michigan “Fab Five,” led the Wolverines to consecutive NCAA championship games and was the top pick in the 1993 NBA draft. The five-time NBA All-Star is best remembered for his years with the Sacramento Kings.

Webber’s high school and college legacies, however, were tarnished when he pleaded guilty to criminal contempt in 2002 in connection to the Michigan booster scandal involving Ed Martin, who allegedly gave Webber illicit loans beginning in eighth grade.

Michigan forfeited victories from Webber’s two years in Ann Arbor, and removed its 1992 and 1993 Final Four banners from Crisler Center. The university was barred from associating with Webber until 2013.

Former Michigan star and NBA player Chris Webber was named a finalist for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame during a ceremony in New Orleans on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017. The Class of 2017 will be announced April 3.

Despite his conviction, Country Day refused to forfeit wins during Webber’s career, which included three Michigan High School Athletic Association state championships. The MHSAA said at the time that it had no legal authority to force the school to forfeit games.

“I don’t regret anything,” Webber said of his high school and college careers. “I’m thankful that God has allowed me to be here today.”

Although a rift remains between Webber and his former college, and also some of his Michigan teammates, he prefers to focus on the positive memories.

“I went to two Final Fours, was Freshman of the Year (and) led the (Big Ten) in rebounding as a freshman,” Webber said. “I left my mark in the college game, and I’m definitely happy about that. Hopefully, my friends are enjoying this moment … it’s because of all my teammates, as well.”

Webber, who played 43 games for the Pistons from 2006-07, became a basketball analyst after retiring and will help call Sunday’s NBA All-Star Game for TNT.

Other Hall of Fame finalists are: NBA referee Hugh Evans, all-time winningest high school boys basketball coach Robert Hughes, former AP Female Athlete of the Year Rebecca Lobo, former Villanova coach Rollie Massimino, Notre Dame women’s basketball coach Muffet McGraw, two-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year Sidney Moncrief, Baylor women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey, Kansas coach Bill Self, former Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan and 10-time AAU national champions Wayland Baptist University.

Members of Cass Tech’s boys basketball team celebrate winning their first Detroit Public Schools League championship since 1998 on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017, at Calihan Hall. The Technicians beat Detroit King, 59-47.

Detroit Cass Tech’s boys basketball team found a steady shooting rhythm and won its first Detroit Public School League championship in nearly two decades on Saturday.

Michael Green (5-for-5 shooting) led all scorers with 14 points, helping the Technicians beat Detroit King 59-47 at Calihan Hall.

It’s the first PSL championship since 1998 for Cass Tech (16-3), which shot 65.6% from the field.

“I was optimistic that this day was going to come,” said Cass Tech coach Steven Hall, who returned to his alma mater as coach in August 2015. “You know it happened pretty quick. That was my motivation to come back home, to my community and to my school.”

Cass Tech’s efficiency was apparent around the rim, particularly with shots from senior Leonard Silas.

Silas had a highlight-worthy finish to open the fourth quarter after King cut Cass Tech’s lead to 40-36.

King wasn’t nearly as efficient, shooting 34.1 percent. The Crusaders  (14-4) trailed 21-17 with 3:55 left in the second quarter.

“We’ve been giving up 52 points per game this year, and defense is something that we identify ourselves with,” Hall said. “Not just today, but all season, we’ve been doing a good job of defending.”

Kemon Bassett led King with 13 points.

After U-D Jesuit won the Catholic League championship, senior Vince Manna holds the jersey of Ike Eke, who went home to Nigeria upon learning his mother had been killed.

When four-time defending Catholic League champion University of Detroit-Jesuit trailed Warren De La Salle by 10 points late in the third quarter, Elijah Collins said the Cubs needed a quick fix.

“I knew we needed some firepower,” the junior guard said. “I came out hot, hitting some shots and doing everything I could do on defense, getting steals and trying to spark our team. It was our energy. We came out kind of slow in the third quarter, so we had to turn the switch on and fix it.”

Collins scored nine of his game-high 18 points over the next three minutes when the Cubs reclaimed the lead and went on to ground the Pilots, 63-56, in the A/B Division championship at Detroit Mercy’s Calihan Hall today.

“Don’t get me wrong, when we’re down 10 with 10 minutes left in the game, that’s a little bit concerning,” Cubs coach Pat Donnelly said. “I’m proud of our guys the way they didn’t give up, the way they came back.”

Collins picked up a loose ball at the top of the key and drained a three-pointer as the third-quarter buzzer sounded. It pulled UDJ (15-3) within four points and seemed to spark the Cubs, who outscored De La Salle, 21-10, in the fourth.

After falling behind, 10-1, in the first three minutes of the game, De La Salle clawed back and held the Cubs scoreless over the next five minutes. The Pilots took their first lead, 11-10, early in the second quarter, and led, 27-26, at the half. Points on six straight possessions midway through the third put De La Salle in control, or so it seemed.

“Our kids were really excited when we were up by 10, and I told them you didn’t win the Super Bowl. This team has won the state championship and they’ve won four Catholic Leagues in a row, they weren’t going to quit,” Pilots coach Greg Esler said.

De La Salle got 14 points from Jordan Winowiecki, 14 from Ryan Anderson and 13 from Luke Pfromm. Esler said the game was a learning experience for his team.

“We lose now, it stings, but we had a great opportunity to win and didn’t take advantage of it,” he said. “We’ll be ready to go (next year) and make sure they don’t win six.”

The Cubs played without starting forward Ike Eke, whose mother, Margaret, was hit by a speeding motorist and killed in Nigeria on Saturday.

“I told them yesterday and they’re all heartbroken for Ike,” Donnelly said. “They’re just happy to have this over with and come out with a win. Now they can relax a little bit and get in touch with Ike and tell him we got one for him.”

Macomb Lutheran North 70, Riverview Richard 62: Drew Arft had visited Calihan Hall to pick up individual awards before, but that wasn’t the same as being able to win a Catholic League title on Dick Vitale Court.

“It was amazing out there,” the Lutheran North guard said. “I love this whole gym here, and I said I would love to play here and finally got to do it. We got the win too, so that’s even more special.”

The Siena Heights-bound guard scored a game-high 24 points, draining all 10 of his free-throw attempts, and the Mustangs won their first Catholic League C/D Division crown, 70-62 over Gabriel Richard on a stage that was bigger than what Arft was accustomed to.

“I just wanted to stay as calm as possible out there and treat it as another game, because at the end of the day it’s just that — another big game. But I’ve played in a lot of big games throughout my career,” he said.

Macomb Lutheran North won Catholic League division titles at the varsity, JV and freshman levels this winter, so all three squads shared in the championship moment Sunday.

This was the first year that the Catholic League opened its playoffs to affiliate members, so while pairing “Catholic League Champions” with “Lutheran North” has an unfamiliar ring to it, coach Jeff DeMasse said it was a big accomplishment for a special group.

“It was one of our goals from the beginning of the year, because we knew we had the opportunity to play in it for the first time,” he said. “They’re just playing hard, playing together and really cooking right now. We practiced normal as usual, and I just told the kids to take it all in, because it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
